Technical Arts Support Staff

The Technical Director has the daily responsibility for the technical operations of a theatre or performing arts center, including lighting, sound, set design and construction, and coordinating necessary maintenance.
Manages and directs the operation of the technical stage facilities and equipment in the Cypress Center for the Performing Arts, WPS Gymnasium, Laker Cafe and any other campus facilities that include computer lighting systems, sound recording and amplification systems, and stage rigging systems.
Manages and coordinates, in advance, the setup and equipment needs to show presenters, which includes guest presentations/speakers, theatre lighting and sound, show/concert production and special events on campus.
Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
Designs, sets up, maintains, and operates lighting and sound systems for theatre, dance, music, and other productions and projects; assists faculty and staff with technical matters.
Advises production managers, lighting and sound designers, on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show, and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs.
Supervises and assists with set and stage construction and management.
Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
Assists with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies.
Works with both the Technology Department and Fine Arts Department to make recommendations regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
Maintain an inventory of stage tech
Qualifications and Skills
Basic experience in all technical areas preferred, minimum 3-5 years experience in technical theater or related field
BA/BFA in Technical Theater preferred.
Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and guidelines as they apply to a live theatre.
Knowledge about all aspects of technology as applied to live theatre: carpentry, drafting, lighting, sound, and video technology both current and outdated.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Work Conditions
This is a full-time flex-schedule position (no more than 40 hours each week). A typical schedule will be 8:00 am - 4:00 pm (30 minute break) or 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm (30 minute break) for evening rehearsals and performances.
Successful candidate will also perform evening and weekend hours as needed to ensure proper operation of load-ins, events,, direct supervision of technical staff.
For training and supervision of students, may need to occasionally lift and carry items up to 120 lbs. and may experience discomfort from bending, twisting, climbing, crawling, pushing, kneeling, stooping, and reaching overhead; may occasionally be exposed to humidity and temperature outside normal ranges; may be exposed to dust, and electrical hazards from construction of stage sets and working with high voltage; stand and walk 75% of the time; may occasionally need to use special tools; flex-schedule weekend and evening hours.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
